Influències: New York

Com una ciutat pot ser el centre de moltes cançons. Està clar que Nova York és un centre neuràlgic musicalment parlant. Doncs avui he plantejat indagar sobre temes que parlen sobre aquesta magnificient ciutat dels Estats Units.

I la primera que se'm passa pel cap és la que la banda americana Strokes va fer amb "New York City Cops". Això va ser al seu debut Is This It?, però el tema no va ser introduït a la versió que van fer pels Estats Units, ja que va ser censurada. Pel contrari, la versió de Gran Bretanya (la que va arribar aquí), sí que va permetre incorporar la cançó. Això va ser el 2001, alguna cosa sobre l'atemptat hi va tenir a dir...

L'últim elepé de REM també va recordar Nova York en el primer senzill de Around the Sun (2004), amb la cançó "Leaving New York". To més nostàlgic en aquest cas.

"It's easier to leave than to be left behind
Leaving was never my proud
Leaving New York, never easy
I saw the light fading out"

Un clàssic de tots els clàssics és la cançó que cantava Frank Sinatra però que va ser composada per Fred Ebb i John Kander. Crec que no té gaire a comentar: "New York, New York". Simplement s'ha d'escoltar.

No cal ser americà per incorporar i recordar Nova York a les seves cançons. Encara que fos de manera diferents als dos casos anteriors, Belle & Sebastian, des del meravellós Dear Catastrophe Waitress (2003), van composar l'acústica "Piazza New York Catcher".

Un altre clàssic, Sting, amb "Englishman in New York", tema del 1987. És fantàstic i terriblement sincer el sentiment que té aquest anglès quan passeja pels carrers de la gran ciutat:

And you can hear it in my accent when I talk

I així podria seguir una bona estona, amb U2, Madonna, Liza Minelli, Pet Shop Boys... Però també hi ha bandes que han près directament la ciutat per portar-la com a nom, com The New York Dolls.

Aquests són alguns dels exemples, però deixo la porta oberta per altres propostes que desconec o que se m'han passat per alt. Està clar que si no has fet alguna cançó amb "New York" de referència no ets ningú!
